What do you do as a Governor?
Governors are the strategic leaders of a school and have a vital role to play in making sure that every pupil gets the best possible education.
Governors focus on three core strategic functions:
- ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
- holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
- overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
At Oak Lodge School, we have a small governing board including the Headteacher, a staff governor, and a parent governor. The remainder have been co-opted onto the governing board due to their skills and knowledge. We’re particularly interested to hear from parents with children at the school who are interested in being a governor.
How busy will I be as a Governor?
Each year, we have four full governor meetings, with one meeting per term. There are two sub committees that meet once a term, you will become a member of one of these two committees.
For example, our Schools and Residential committee meets each term, and usually that’s online (in the comfort of your home or office).
We also “link” our governors up with particular aspects of school focus or life (e.g. the curriculum), so that they can engage with relevant staff in the school on matters they are “linked up” together on.
Will I get support and help as a Governor?
Absolutely! We’re a friendly team and training is provided by Wandsworth Council. By becoming a governor you can help the school reach ‘Outstanding’ again, during an exciting period of change. You’ll will learn a lot about how schools are run, bring your own skills and experience to our work, and play an important part in the vibrant Oak Lodge community.
